In Inscribed – In Sea, In Sky and On Shore (1 & 2), the artist uses parallel impasto brushstrokes, applied through a slow and meditative process, to build richly textured sea shore images. The endless movement of clouds and ripples of the waves reflects the Earth’s enduring energy, while the simple built structures suggest humanity’s quiet presence within nature. Layered, textured surfaces evoke ancient geological and biological strata, symbolising permanence and the passage of time. The rhythmic interplay of light, shadow, air, and water speaks to resilience and continuity. The expressive mark-making also recalls strokes of writing, suggesting a timeless, universal language or sacred text that embodies the life force and inspires the artist’s practice as both painter and scribe.
