About this piece

In Held, the artist portrays the timeless bond between mother and child using bold, continuous black ink lines on paper. By omitting facial features, the work shifts the viewer’s attention from individual identity to the universal experience of maternal love and connection. The child is completely embraced within the mother’s form, their outlines flowing seamlessly into one another until they become almost indistinguishable. This unbroken line symbolises the profound, inseparable relationship of motherhood, where the boundaries between self and child blur. Stripped of shading, detail, and external context, the composition distils the essence of this intimate connection, offering a moving reflection on love, protection, identity, and the intertwining of two lives.
