Susan Blumberg
Road to Rosendal (set of 2)

Winning Bid: R 4,500.00

Size Framed: 220 x 380mm ea
Medium: Monoprint, ink on paper

In this artwork, “Road to Rosendal”, Sue depicts her road trip from Johannesburg to Cape Town via the small towns, or “dorpies”. The route taken was carefully planned by Melinda Silverman (architect town planner and “dorpster” of note) who led us whenever possible off the main highways onto lesser used dirt roads. This light hearted group of etchings, drypoints, monoprints and watercolours is inspired by this journey. The reference is mainly from Irwin Manoim’s fine photographs and others taken by her fellow travellers. In this piece, as the day progresses the magnificent Karoo produces variations in light and colour with the movement of the sun, shadows of the clouds and typical short-lived afternoon thunderstorms often accompanied by a darker brooding sky. The open spaces, mountains and koppies, rocky outcrops in the distance, texture of the dirt and grasses, dry, windswept, unattended and vast, resonate with Sue’s affirming and lifelong kinship with the beauty of this South African landscape. The etchings correlate with the places listed Johannesburg-Rosendal-Ficksberg-Colesburg-Loxton/Carnarvon-Sutherland-Cape Town-Calitz Dorp-Swartberg Pass-Beauford West –Mokala National Park-Johannesburg.
