Janet Pollack
Riga Shul The Great Choral Synagogue

Winning Bid: R 17,000.00

Size Framed: 790 x 950mm
Medium: Oil paint with a palette knife

In this artwork, “Riga – The Great Choral Synagogue”, Janet coveys her story which began in Riga where her paternal grandfather was born. This beautiful synagogue, which was built in 1871, in the Renaissance Revival style was tragically destroyed in 1941 during the 2nd World War when the Nazis filled it with Jewish women and children and burned it to the ground. In painting this synagogue, the artist honours those victims who were so brutally killed using black and white oil paint, with a palette knife to create texture and depth.
