Butkow attempts to pin down something that cannot be pinned down, making space for things to feel fragile and ephemeral through the tensions they hold between organisation and chaos. Butkow is a painter whose edges became so expanded that she paints in space rather than be limited by the shape/size/flatness of a canvas. Her particular interest is the painted surface that has a propensity to grow out its frame. She explodes the category of ‘painting’, de-disciplines her paintings.
