Dina Kaplan
Challah of the World
Winning Bid: R 5,400.00
Size Framed: 330 x 440mm
Medium: Oil on canvas
In this artwork, “Challah of the World”, Dina refers used to Talmudic reference to Adam, the first man, as the “Challah of the world.” Just like we separate a piece of the Challah dough to sanctify the bread and render it kosher, Hashem separated man from the rest of creation to sanctify the world through his Divine Service. Hashem mixed earth and water and formed man. We too knead flour and water to create Challa. Flour and water, earth and water… As the artist kneads her challah dough each week to nourish her family, she thinks how Hashem created man and nourishes all man. This is her story… birth, child rearing, providing for their needs and focusing on each person’s Divine Service. For Dina, there is no greater purpose than bringing new life into the world, sustaining it, and raising it to fulfill its purpose within creation.
