Ariella Lipschitz
Harp Of Unity

Winning Bid: R 10,200.00

Size Framed: 720 x 965mm
Medium: Ink, gesso and photocopied book pages on canvas

In this artwork, “Harp of Unity”, Ariella uses photocopied pages from Dust of War, a Yiddish book written by the Artist’s great-grandfather, as the background. The book documents the WWI expulsion of Jews from Lithuania – a history shared by many South African Jews whose families endured similar difficulties. Layered over these pages, Lithuania’s main roads and waterways form a map, grounding the work in the place of its story. Painted in ink over this, a large harp symbolises King David and the unifying power of Tehillim. Figures gathered on and around the harp illustrate how reciting Tehillim bring the Jewish nation together in both hardship and celebration.
